Velika paganska vojska

Velika Danska vojska ili kako su je Englezi zvali „Velika paganska vojska”, je bila savez vikinga poreklom iz Danske, ali i iz Norveške i Švedske, koji su se ujedinili pod jednom komandom da napadnu četiri Engleska kraljevstva 865. godine. Od 8. veka, Vikizi su napadali i pljačkali manastire, Velika Paganska vojska se razlikovala od ovih napada, jer je bila mnogo veća i formirana da okupira i osvaja velike teritorije.[1]

Napadi na Englesku

Napadači su prvobitno došli u Istočnu Angliju, gde im je kralj dao konje u zemenu za mir. Zimu su proveli u Tetfordu, pre nego sto su otišli na sever da zauzmu Jork.Tokom 868. vojska je marširala duboko u Merciju i prezimila u Notingemu. Mercianci su prihvatili zahteve vojske, koja se vratila u Jork za zimu. Godine 870. Paganska vojska se vratila u Istočnu Angliju, osvajajući i ubijajući kralja. Godine 871. Vikinzi su otisli u Veseks, gde im je Alfred Veliki platio da odu. Vikinzi su potom otisli u London da bi prezimili 873. godine. Osvojili su Merciju 874. i samo Veseks ostao neosvojen.
