Lee ”Scratch” Perry
Lee ”Scratch” Perry (Rainford Hugh Perry, 20. maaliskuuta 1936 Kendal, Jamaika – 29. elokuuta 2021[1][2]) oli yksi merkittävimmistä reggae- sekä dub-musiikin vaikuttajista.
Bob Marley and the Wailers oli ollut jo 1960-luvulla suosittu Jamaikalla, mutta vuonna 1970 Bob Marley ja Perry yhdistivät voimansa. Perry onnistui vakuuttamaan Marleyn muuttamaan tyyliänsä tarkoista harmonioista vilpittömämpään suuntaan. Marley otti Perryn vaikutuksesta hengellisemmän lähestysmistavan ja kopioi joitakin osia tämän laulutyylistä. Marley alkoi laulaa enemmän bassovoittoisesti. Perry oli tuottamassa Marleylle useita kappaleita, joista tuli maailmanlaajuisesti tunnettuja. Perryn Black Arkissa äänitettiin monia muitakin tunnettuja levyjä. Siellä kävivät äänittämässä muun muassa Heptones, Junior Byles, Max Romeo ja The Congos.[1]
Black Arkin suosio alkoi laskea 1970-luvun lopussa, ja Perry itse kärsi mielenterveyden häiriöstä ja käytti liikaa marijuanaa ja rommia. Tunnetun legendan mukaan Perry itse poltti studionsa vuonna 1983.[3][1]
Perry jatkoi uraansa 1980-luvulla ja teki joitakin levyä ja tuotti myös muiden albumeita. Hänen vanha tuotantonsa nousi pinnalle 1990-luvulla, ja niistä otettiin monia uusintapainoksia ja tehtiin kokoelmia, mikä auttoi Perryä taloudellisesti. Vuonna 2003 hänen uusi levynsä Jamaican E.T. palkittiin parhaan reggaealbumin Grammyllä.[1]
